yahoo's automatic sensor looks at where you might have placed a question recently, and assumes it "might" be where your next question is headed. No biggie.

Cleaned coins do not look natural for one thing and for another vinegar is an acid and it will eat the metal. Coin collectors like their coins to look natural and sometimes that means they tone. That is the way it goes. There is nothing so ugly than a shinny coin that has no detail and is all beat up due to harsh cleaning. Also when a person tries to sell a cleaned coin, it looks like he/she are dishonest, for they are trying to make the coin a higher grade than it is. A real rare coin can be sent to a pro to have it conserved, they will try to save it and know what they can or can not do. A coin with a little say glue or grease on it can be dipped in acetone ( hardware type 100% not finger nail polish remover) that takes off those things, then rinse in distilled water and air dry or pat dry. Ancient coins have usually been cleaned but they also do not have the surfaces of the coins that were minted by minting presses. It is true a cleaned coin can lose a lot of value and may become worthless if harshly cleaned. Best bet leave them alone. I have bought cleaned coins for I got them at a good price and could not afford them otherwise. I am hoping over time they will tone so that they will look better.

They are afraid that the excess cleaning will "wear" the coin. The more a coin is polished and buffed, the more it weathers (wears away), making important features less prominent.

If you don't know how to take care of it properly, don't do anything to it. My brother-in-law inherited some extremely valuable coins that were rusty and dirty; he immediately washed them off with water and ruined his inheritance.

Why would you take old coins to a pawnbroker when a coin dealer will give you a much better price if you don't clean the coins! Most coin collectors prefer a bit of dirt to a nasty cleaned coin. If they are crusted or unreadable for the muck, please peruse the suggestions in the link. I hope that helps.

Do not EVER clean a coin. Gold, silver, it does not matter it will ALWAYS lower the value. Shiny does not = more value. Quite the opposite if it's cleaned.

Here's the problem, Cleaning leaves little scratches and rubs in the coin that can be seen with the eye or a loop. Collectors don't want cleaned coins as much so it drives down the value. Some coins if cleaned will take them down to just the silver value.

Don't clean them and for the record don't sell them to a pawn shop. Check with local coin dealers first and price them on Ebay so you know the current market price for them and don't get riped off. Coins are tricky. Some Dates and Mint marks are worth WAY more than similar dates or mint marks.

IF you have any question please feel free to email me.
