It seems odd that each denomination of coin is exactly the same in circumference as its counterpart on the opposite side of the border. In fact, even all the variations of U.S. dollar coins now in circulation match the Loonie. This can’t be a coincidence. There must be some sort of purpose to these shared sizes.

Answer by liberty911There is no coating. Most US coins are a copper core with nickel cladding. The newer dollars are brass, the 5 cent is a mix of copper and nickel, and the cent is copper plated zinc.

My husband has collected a couple of cup fulls of foreign coins from the service and some trips afterwards–France, Hong Kong, Mexico, Canada, etc. I could just throw these coins out, but I’m wondering if there is someplace I may take them and trade them for American money. The banks around here only trade for foreign “bills” not coins. Most of them are dated in the 60′s or 70′s, but some are older. I have these 2 Liberty Dollars (I believe) dated 1878 and 1885. They have been circulated, but still in pretty good shape. Are they worth more than weight in silver? What could they possibly be worth? I also have about 4 un-circulated Sacajawea dollar coins. Can you please tell me what those might be worth if any? Thanks.
